After much resistance I'm about to try this again. I have a crappy Virgin mp3 player. Itunes isn't going to be so important to me as burning my CD collection (it's rather vast and continues to grow).

I hear about this Toshiba Gigabeat. Any ideas on it or others?

I'd love to burn much of my collection and then go from home to car to office and constantly be surrounded by my superior tastes in music. Occasionally I'll want to check the web for say, Cara Mia by Jay and the Americans.

I'm on a pc and find Apple culture unpleasant but if it's really superior, I'll go there.

Rancho, I'm eagerly awaiting the responses to your questions for my own selfish reasons. Meanwhile here's some stuff you may or may not know about Jay and the Americans.

I don't understand what you mean when you say you find Apple culture unpleasant. We who use Apple find it to be superior, That's why we use it. I had to use windows at work, no thank you.

I thought Apple people were laid back.

Many on your team are so enthusiastic and commited that it can be a little off-putting to those of us on the fence or happy with Windows. Hard as it is to believe, I've used both and prefer Windows. There is a Mac "culture" and I find it oppresive and occasionally shrill.

But my real point is I'd just as soon not buy an Apple product (that I assume was designed with Macs in mind) if there's something better for me out there.

The ipod works with windows, so it can't be that Mac-y.

My sister gave me one for Christmas, but I haven't opened it yet since I want to upgrade to the big one. I have no idea how these things work anyway. I'm such a luddite when it comes to things digital.

I like the ipod a lot, and we both use ours with windows. If you were using some obscure OS then I would say no but with windows there is no problem.

When I was researching mp3 players for a gift, the iAudio X5 (especially the larger capacity X5L) seemed to the hot mp3 player on the various mp3 player bulletin boards--even ones devoted to other brands. (I ended up cheapening out, but I still consider it the one to beat.) Here's a review:

ETA: If you're curious, I ended up getting an iRiver 790 for myself, since I didn't need anything over 1GB, and teh iRiver H10 5GB for my husband, because it was majorly on sale.

This thread is very helpful for those of us (e.g. me) who have been a bit slow to invest in new music technology. I was wondering how many of you use mp3 players in your car? Our car still has a cassette deck and it seems pointless to change it to a CD player given the availability and cost of mp3 players. We have a cassette adapter for a CD player and were wondering if it might be possible to use this with an mp3 player or if something more technical is required?

There are lots of high-tech options for adapting your mp3 player for the car, but the cassette adapter works just fine for me.

There are also a lot of CD players that also read burned discs of MP3s now as well as several with mini-jack inputs so you can plug your player in. Though this is what I'm waiting for, the Lenovo ET980. If I have to get one imported I will.
