Amazon has brought back part of the super deal for Spiegelau glassware. Their large Burgundy glasses, the Vino Grande, six for $40, with free shipping. These are good glasses, usually about $15 each. Make great gifts, especially when paired with a nice wine.

Other glass sets of six include chardonnay ($44) and martini glasses ($54). Also three different decanters, starting at $40.

My only complaint was that if they need to charge me $30 because they're robbing the duck to pay the boar they might as well give me a more substantial portion of flour, water, and bits of meat.

Thanks for the tip!

But wasn't the last truly great deal 2 for 1? I.E about 12 for $40. Maybe they were different stems.

Yes, that was the great deal. This isn't as good, but it's better than recent prices. I think they're doing a closeout of older stock

My guess is that once the Riedel purchase of Spiegelau goes thru, the quality of Spiegelau will go down significantly and the lower price will = lower quality

I don't want to come off as a shill, but I can't recommend enough Schott-Zwiesel Tritan glasses. The Bordeaux and Burgundy glasses in their "Diva" line can be found on the internet for about $55 for 6. These are very large glasses- 29 oz.- and are sturdy and dishwasher safe. Since I introduced them in my restaurant 2 years ago, the breakage has gone down significantly.

Thanks, Mark. I yahoo'd the name, and came up with these glasses. Look like a good deal, and they're made of titanium crystal. There were a number of providers, I just grabbed the first one.

Breakage and chipping are big problems for me, too.

Paul,
Many customers at our restaurant comment on the beauty of these glasses and automatically assume they are Riedels. My favorite demonstration is to take two glasses and bang them together several times. Horrified looks turn into awe. "You can't do that with Riedel" is always my punchline. Chipping is non-existent, and the glasses are fortified at the base, top of the stem and the lip. Don't get me wrong, they are not unbreakable, but they are 10 times sturdier than Sommelier Series glasses at a fraction of the price.

Yes, thanks. (That'll teach me to try to remember something for 15-20 seconds :))

I made the correction above.

I have an amazingly ignorant question! I want to get just one set of wine glasses so would the multi-purpose be my best bet?

These are good glasses, and go well with most wines. If you're intending to make a gift of them, I'm sure they would be appreciated.

Mark Slater's excellent comment on Schott-Zwiesel Tritan glasses is good, too. I bought a dozen about three years ago, and still have 9 or 10.

i got some Speigalau glasses in some amazon deal couple of years ago to be used as our everyday glasses - stupid me - all of them got broken pretty quickly. So now i have sturdy and cheap Crate&Barrel ones.

These would be a better bet.

I once had a few of these. Do you have a dishwasher? I've found both Riedel and Spiegelau don't do so well with hand washing. They chip, break, and get pretty awfully dull after a while. The Schotts do a bit better I think, not to mention this particular one is quite a bit better form than the Spiegelau Multipurpose.

The the Schotts, definitely. The one I posted is a pretty good general purpose glass. That's what I'd do if I were you.
