The entire country of Iraq, often called the cradle of civilization, made the list of most endangered cultural sites on Tuesday

Quote

Ten thousand years ago, the foundations of western civilization were laid in the fertile floodplain between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in what was Mesopotamia and is now the modern nation of Iraq. Within its borders are an estimated 10,000 sites that chronicle thousands of years of human history, including many great cultural achievements.

This was brought home by the staggering show of Mesopotamian cultural artifacts at the Met - was it last year or the year before?

If the author could go around the place hitting random readers with a rubber hammer, the Pink Pig would still be worth a visit.

i was lucky enough to see most of this in person between 1978 and 1981 (we lived in baghdad then) before much of it got blasted by two decades of war. mosul, nineveh, ur, samarra, babylon etc. etc.
