The discussion on food web-sites is much more useful for me, although these days the only place I really look at other than Mouthfuls is Chowhound for the occasional interesting write-up on cheap eats. As far as the New York dining scene is concerned, eGullet is less active (and less reliable in my opinion) than Mouthfuls.
***Every Monday***At the Sign of the Pink Pig.
If the author could go around the place hitting random readers with a rubber hammer, the Pink Pig would still be worth a visit.

The list of blogs I read is on the left sidebar of Chez Pim
In the spirit of reading blogs of people you "know", a few other MFers have blogs:
Elissa got her Contrarian Quarterly.
Alder and his Vinography.
Louisa's fabulously Movable Feast.
Is Derrick here or just OA? Well, his is Obsession with Food.
Tana and Carolyn each has one too, on small farms and CA wines, respectively.

I sort of agree that knowing the palate and experience of the bloggers would be helpful, but those things are pretty transparent on the blogs, no? You can just read through where the bloggers have been and what their opinions of some of the restaurants you know are. That way it's pretty easy to calibrate your own taste again theirs.
Same goes with reading reviews on food forums. And in a way, unless you are a regular and know most people in the forum, it's easier (quicker) to learn their individual tastes on blogs.

Anyway, I have enjoyed looking at Rancho Gordo's recipes, too, and have in mind to try making one of his suggestions with cactus paddles, which I have seen at one of the markets I frequent.
I also enjoy the wonderful food photography of dishes on some food blogs
