The Newark Star-Ledger reports on a recent contest in New York City involving "national champion" pizza makers from the US, Italy, Finland, and Australia. The contest was sponsored by a national pizza service company magazine.

Bergmon made a cold-smoked kotzone, a kind of pita pizza, with cold-smoked salmon (yum), cheese, sauce, greens, and a balsamic dressing.

Farrell's Truffle Shuffle consisted of rosemary-roasted potatoes, forest mushrooms, double smoked bacon, truffle cheese and truffle oil on a chestnut cream.

The top two pizzas were clearly Lieber's and Adriani's, and it was tough choosing between the two. Adriani's pizza featured superb toppings - the lardo di colonnata (pork fat) and salsiccia especially - but a weak crust. Lieber's pizza featured a first-rate crunchy crust but so-so everything else (the truffles, chopped scallions, Alfredo sauce and shredded mozzarella just didn't add up, although I liked the peppery kick.

In the end, the judges and People's Choice votes were added up, with Adriani winning by a slim margin.

My only complaint was that if they need to charge me $30 because they're robbing the duck to pay the boar they might as well give me a more substantial portion of flour, water, and bits of meat.
