The Weather service has released new maps which suggest a "hurricane like" storm which could feature 70 mph winds and dump 12 to 16 inches of snow on much of NJ, southern NY state, and eastern Pennsylvania.

QUOTE
The windy, chilly snow storm that is expected to hit tonight and continue into Friday is expected to dump over a foot of snow over much of the state, according to snowfall amounts released by the National Weather Service this morning.

Forecasters are predicting as much as 15 inches of snow in parts of Morris and Sussex Counties, while parts of central Jersey, including Morris, Middlesex and Monmouth counties, could see up to 13 inches pile up, according to the National Weather Service.

Farther south, Mercer and Ocean counties should see about a foot of snow on the ground, and southern New Jersey should see about 7 to 9 inches of accumulation.

Northeast sections of the state in Bergen, Passaic and Essex counties should see about 9 to 11 inches of snow.

There's uncertainty about how the storm system will track. The weather service said warm air from the ocean will determine the rain-snow line.

Yikes
My only complaint was that if they need to charge me $30 because they're robbing the duck to pay the boar they might as well give me a more substantial portion of flour, water, and bits of meat.

We've already gotten 2 ft. of snow since late yesterday afternoon, and that's not even from the storm in question. It's supposed to snow right through Sunday here.

I saw a similar article on the nj.com site yesterday evening, which also said that the storm is supposed to "hit tonight," which would have been last night. Very confusing.

According to the NWS, the winter storm warning begins at 3:00 am tomorrow, so I guess that's the real time frame.

Right now they're saying 6 inches for Bergen Co., always subject to change. The real fear is those winds & downed power lines. Here's hoping it all tracks out to sea somehow. This is getting tiresome.

Wasn't last winter much milder, or is my memory going?

We really got a pass last winter. It was a pleasure.

I have had enough of this year's weather to last me. Another couple of days without lights or heat and I might axe Scatman Crothers right in the belly.

Well, yeah, your mind probably is going laugh.gif . . . but I think you're right about it having been milder last year. We had snow, what, maybe once? Never to the point that I needed to get out my shitkickers, one of which needed a new shoelace since the winter before (2008 or early 2009).

I'm sure the Olympic organizers are even more jealous

We have rain mixed with snow up here, and warmer than normal temperatures for the past couple of weeks. It was dry and not too cold for Winterlude, which occasionally gets nicknamed Waterloode.

Very pretty, the big fat flakes coming straight down. Probably lovely in City Hall Park. But it may not be so pretty to me in a little while when I venture up to Midtown.

5 minutes ago it was raining, now it's snowing and sticking, enough already
“One thing kids like is to be tricked. For instance, I was going to take my little nephew to Disneyland, but instead I drove him to an old burned-out warehouse. 'Oh, no!', I said, 'Disneyland burned down.' He cried and cried, but I think that deep down he thought it was a pretty good joke. I started to drive over to the real Disneyland, but it was getting pretty late.”

It has been snowing (and blowing) here all day long, since around 9 AM. But it hasn't been sticking at all. I'll take that.

Don't be. It's a fucking mess. During the day yesterday, Stratton Mountain (ski area) was getting powder on the upper mountain (3 feet of it!) and for anyone lucky enough to be there (I wasn't), the skiing was reportedly spectacular. Everywhere else, the snow was thick, wet, and heavy. When my husband got home from work last evening in his F250 w/plow attached, he could barely make it up the driveway. He had to use the truck like a battering ram, repeatedly backing up and charging the wall of snow. When he got to the top, he just parked it and left it. We ended up shoveling out most of the driveway this morning. Not a pleasant task – a modest shovelful of snow weighed about 10 lbs. & if we'd stuck to modest shovelfuls, we'd still be out there shoveling. As it was, it took about 2 1/2 hours between digging out the cars and clearing this:

Now it's raining, and the snow is approximately the texture of a Slurpee. There are plow trucks getting stuck everywhere, and if they're lucky they'll get through today with their drivetrains in tact.

For the global warming doubters: this is a highly unusual storm for February. This is the kind of shit we get in April from time to time. It's warm enough that the ground surface isn't frozen, so plowing and shoveling brings up quite a bit of mud and gravel from beneath. Like I said – it's a fucking mess.
