I hate to say it, but I can imagine there is sufficient novelty and substance in the Dead's career to make Dead studies a viable proposition. This is not going to be true of every rock band, of course - but it would be the easiest thing in the world, for example, to put together an academic course on the Sex Pistols or Frank Zappa.
