He was too subtle for those times, too. He stuck with his brilliant vision regardless.

My wife thought he was talky, boring, and overly obvious.

I thought she was wrong.

She also wondered, if Rohmer was so high-minded, what was up with that famous ass shot of Arielle Dombasle in Pauline at the Beach?

I think she (happily) just had the wrong chromosome set for that.

I've seen several of his films, probably a lot of them, I recall almost nothing about them.

Probably because they are more issue oriented than plot based.

I'll never forget the part, at the end of My Night at Maud's, when the Martians suddenly attack out of nowhere and Jean-Louis Trintignant joins forces with the Mafia to defeat them.

Wasn't there a slightly creepy movie about a girl's knee?

ETA: Oh yes, Pauline à la plage was another one.

I don't remember anything about a single Fassbinder I saw and I've seen a lot of those too.

Gee, I remember stuff about Fassbinder. The difficulty with him is remembering which parts go with which films, particularly in light of his frequent use of the same actors.
And with both directors, it may have been some time since you viewed the pictures.
