The folks at Port Clyde Fresh Catch in Maine are looking into the possibility of a once-a-month CSF in New York City, with members getting their shrimp fresh, and having the possibility of special-ordering other seafood (if they have room on their truck).

I've had their frozen shrimp, which are delicious if a bit mushy when cooked. This could be a good thing. Right now, you can order from them for mail delivery or pickup (I suppose in Port Clyde, worth a trip).

Fresh shrimp harvesting starts tomorrow and runs through March. Fresh Maine shrimp is insanely good and cheap, but the Port Clyde posse is apparently charging 5x what everyone else is - at least according to the waterfront gossip.

A broker I know has some contacts in Chinatown that he ships same-day shrimp to, so I'll find out how that is shaping up this year, in case anyone is interested

Very interesting. They'll be using Marlowe and Daughters as the distribution point and will offer a six month subscription for $216, which works out to $6.40 a pound plus a $4 delivery charge per month. I've got to talk with the wife..

Delicious fresh-harvested shrimp yesterday! Made ceviche (2 lbs whole shrimp made 2 cups). They were small though, about 40-50 count/lb and lots of eggs in their swimmerettes.

I'd get my annual Maine shrimp topic started on eGullet - this would be year #5 - but I toggled the "Lo-fi" skin one day and I haven't been able to log in there since. Here is last year if anyone cares to look (pics!)

To correct my prior post, they do have a six month season going this year owing to a very high biomass. Boats who go to auction usually stop going in March. Those with contracts to Barber Foods (or CSFs) can still go. I highly encourage anyone to join the shrimp CSF this year - or drive up here with a big cooler and I'll set you up.

Marlow and Daughters is sort of a pain for me to get to. Otherwise I'd be all over this.

Driving around Maine these last couple of days, I've seen several fish markets advertising the local shrimp for $1.29 / lb. ohmy.gif
