Where can I get fresh ones in Manhattan, below 34th St preferable?

Also, can I substitute black mustard seeds for brown ones? TIA.

Both Kalustyan's and International Foods have frozen curry leaves. Don't know about the mustard seeds but I always use them interchangeably.

Thank you, thank you. I'm off to Kalustyan's.

Brown and black mustard seeds are indeed interchangeable.

Kalustyan's often has fresh curry leaves. Suvir once told me I could freeze whatever I didn't use.

any indian grocery will carry fresh curry leaves, so there's not much reason to bother with frozen. they last a really long time in the fridge if you put a moistened paper towel or napkin into the packet.

i keep mine in a ziplock bag with the stem in tact. if they are very fresh - even the stems are bright green - then they last a quite nicely. and use the leaves generously - a whole stalk can go in. they freeze ok, but not the best.

black, real tiny, mustard seeds have more flavor than brown, not so tiny, ones.

FYI: Monica Bhide had an entry in her iSpice part of the Washington post food blog about curry leaves: here you go!

I'm pretty sure I've seen fresh ones in pretty much all the grocers in Curry Hill.
