Just got back from my local "Farmer's Market," which I've written about before. For $9.03 I got:

8 big beautiful Cara Cara oranges

2 lbs. asparagus from Chile CA (oops, the season has moved along)

a bunch of 6 bananas from Ecuador

1 lb carrots from who knows where

2 quarts lovely fragrant CA strawberries ($1.50 / quart)

Now, am I supposed to feel guilty because I'm racking up food miles from all over the globe? Or have I done something ecologically brilliant because the cost of this produce reflects economies of scale that are reducing my carbon footprint & saving the planet?

Who the hell knows. The strawberries are very nice but for ripeness & flavor will never match the local guys during their all-too-brief season, when they also cost 4 x the price of the left-coast berries.

I don't know how to assign value to these things any more. But I will eat well for the next few days. smile.gif
