I am looking to buy a fresh black truffle and the only source here is Whole Foods.....at $100 for a canned truffle. Not exactly what I want. Now, I do have a place in the states and can order and have it shipped, so...tell me, if you were going to buy a truffle, who would you buy from? (oh and there is one other store that I have bought them from before, but they now only have them on special order and they come in from New York, so I may as well eliminate the middle man.)

have you checked the cheese coun? i'm serious, my local WF in NYC has truffles at the cheese counter. they sit in rice and the white ones always look vaguely shriveled (well, end of season for white now) but they do have a few every week.

I started to drive over to the real Disneyland, but it was getting pretty late.”

D'Artagnan sells them, but I don't know if they can ship to Canada.

Also probably the Italian grocery in Pike Place Market in Seattle whose name escapes me (great store, though), but again, don't know if they can ship to you.

It's appalling the stuff you have to sift through when you google "truffles" in a simple attempt to be helpful:

$70, that's highway robbery!

I heard on the CBC that there are black perigord truffles in BC now, although Canadian trufficulture is in its infancy.

We've bought both white and black truffles from Citarella. Some were good, some not so good, so I can't really recommend them even though they do sell mail order.
