And now Penn Station is closed through the rush hour due to a fire. One thing after another.

Thank God I saw this before leaving. The buses will be overflowing. Looks like another long schlep down Fifth.

FDNY are out in force on first avenue opposite the hospital -- the fire is in the tunnels which go directly beneath.

Can somebody please explain to me why, at the little deli across from my office, a banana is 30 cents and a small cup of coffee is 75 cents?

A bargain compared to Starbucks.

I didn't mean that the coffee is expensive - I just don't understand the difference in price between the banana and the coffee.

I never ever never ever get coffee at Starbuck's.

I see what you mean, taking into account both cost per pound and labor. For 75 cents a small cup of deli coffee, they should throw in a banana.

Badly bruised shoulder and knee from a spill last Friday - I tripped over a pile of wet floor mats in the bakery kitchen. I should keep a pair of treaded shoes in the office.

The price of a large espresso at Bar Italia in London's Soho has reached two pounds fifty, which is almost five dollars at current rates. And a large espresso is still a pretty small coffee. I suspect the owners of Bar Italia have become millionaires selling what is basically a very small amount of hot water. Their coffee is excellent, but the cost per cup must be miniscule.

Lonely people are obviously willing to part with a lot of money for the solace and companionship offered by a large espresso.

That's even more impressive than the $4.25 cappuccino (in a paper cup_ at the coffee shop in Dag H. park.

Of course I have a half day off today

Of course I get invited to play in a golf outing on a Tillinghast.

Of course it's raining cats-n-dogs.

I sympathize, but at least you have a plausible excuse. Saturday I tripped over my own feet and scraped my left elbow, then Sunday I fell up some stairs and bruised both knees.
It's always something.
