I agreed to this under the condition that the apartment would be completely cleaned on thursday so that I could move all the fragile things myself (paintings, violin, computer, personal files, etc.). I walked into the apartment last night and the entire place is filthy- dust EVERYWHERE, so there was no moving and I spent 3 hours just cleaning surfaces. My landlady promises it will be cleaned today before the move, but I don't think there's any way they can do it well so there will be a lot of scrubbing this weekend and I'm stuck moving the fragile things tonight. She kept saying "I don't think I can clean it to your standards." Is it unreasonable to want to put my hand on the countertop and not have it come away white from the dust? AAARGGH

I can completely sympathize with you -- everytime our building has done repair work in our apartment I've been left with a mess to deal with.

Can you call a service in and have the building reimburse you for it?

Plenty of snow here.

Buttonfly pants. I've yet to encounter the situation in which this proves to be a handy design.

unfortunately no. The building is not owned by a management company- it's the only building owned by a couple. They were not amenable to a suggestion that because I was doing the cleaning they agreed to do, we should further reduce the rent (it's currently been reduced by about 1/3 of a month)

London public transport in the snow.

Not much better than private transport in the snow  It took me 45 minutes to drive my 15 minute journey to the office this morning.

That's definitely not fun. However, I think the prize for "not having fun" goes to the people I overheard on Platform 5 at London Bridge last night at quarter to midnight. They had been trying to get a train to Hastings since 9pm, but all trains to Hastings had been cancelled due to the weather (after being delayed for hours PRIOR to finally being cancelled).

What DO you do when you're stuck at London Bridge close to midnight?
Thieves, arsonists and deserters.

that's the train down to my parents house. They are completely snowed in, can't even get car off drive as it is so icy. Why did it never happen when I was young so I wouldn't have had to go to school?
Yes, I would not recommend smell, touch or taste when it comes to old cock selection. Opinions differ though. Adam 2/3/05

Enough that school has been cancelled yet again. Between the flu and the snow we are going on a solid week with kids cooped up in the house.

Our wait for a bathroom door continues into the third month.

The door installed in late 2003 as part of a renovation swelled with last summer's humidity. Hinges had to be loosened, door wouldn't fully close. When fall came and hinges were tightened, door still wouldn't close and was judged too heavy for the hinges (which can't be changed w/out replacing the entire frame) by someone who knows something about these things. There was no way to reattach it. It got tossed, and we ordered a new one from Home Depot. It would come in a month, we were told.

We called in four week's time to learn that door was not yet shipped.

Two weeks later we learned that truck carrying door was in an accident, and door did not survive.

Another door was ordered. Another four weeks.

We got a call this Monday. Door arrived. Broken in two pieces.

Supposedly a rush order has been placed, and we might just have a door this weekend. Which makes me wonder why we had to wait for four - six weeks the first two times.

The felines have been happy with our doorlessness. They hate closed doors. Guests have been remarkably good humored, too. Still, it is an annoyance.
