I seem to have gotten some foreign matter under a few keys. At least it feels that way, and I need to press hard to get them to register.

Can I just pop off the keys and clean underneath, or will this break the key?

just throw the computer away and buy a new one. did you even bother to read the owners' manual?
“One thing kids like is to be tricked. For instance, I was going to take my little nephew to Disneyland, but instead I drove him to an old burned-out warehouse. 'Oh, no!', I said, 'Disneyland burned down.' He cried and cried, but I think that deep down he thought it was a pretty good joke. I started to drive over to the real Disneyland, but it was getting pretty late.”

my mac has a keyboard release where you can pop off the whole board to clean it, does yours? if so I would take a dry toothbrush and see if you can get it clean

I don't think so. It's a Macbook.

This site suggests that you can pop the keys off. Click on the picture thumbnails to get better photos.

Have you tried blowing the crud out? I keep a can of pressurized air on hand for just such dilemmi. You can get it at Staples. I'd try that before I went popping the keys off (I tried to remove one once, and it's never been right again).

The keys aren't easy to remove and replace. Take it to an Apple store; they'll do it for free. Or Tekserve.

I had something similar happen right after the new year: the kid spilled a glass of water on my MacBook keyboard and it stopped working. The Apple Store just replaced the whole keyboard (at no cost to me, but it was under warranty.)

I found a bottle of pressurized air, and it seems to have solved the problem.
I'll keep you informed, daily, if not hourly, of the progress.
Well, probably not hourly since I only use my laptop in the evenings.
