I get the feeling that I should be fertilizing some or all of my house plants.
Should I and if so, any recommendations for good brands?

It is better to have beans and bacon in peace than cakes and ale in fear.

Depends on the plant. Most of my really green-thumbed friends use Miracle Gro Indoor Plant Food once in a while and water with tea on a regular basis. Overdoing is worse than underdoing, as a general rule. And at least once in a while, every few months, put the plants in a tub of water for a couple of hours to saturate and rinse out salts. I do this once a week to my orchids. Ferns like to stay a wee bit moist all the time and they are happy with just tea. Epiphytes like Christmas cacti like darkness early in October. My 50+ year olds I inherited are starting to bloom already. Just buy a book on indoor plants. Some like to completely dry out before re-watering, some are acid lovers.
