In all seriousness, if a bunch of paper got stuck in my computer and I yanked it out the front (where it feeds in) rather than opening the rear door (which I didn't know existed), would I have doomed my cheap-ass hp 7400 series ink jet printer?

For whatever reason, it no longer wants to print. When I look the printer up in the control panel, is says it's still the default printer, and that it has an "open door". Don't know what that means and the user guide doesn't tell me. Everything appears fine--no error messages, no flashing amber or red lights, just a solid green light indicating it should be working, but when I send a document to be printed, nothing happens. No sounds, nada. Paper is in correctly, too.

I've unplugged it, opened the rear door and closed it again, etc. etc. I even deleted the printer from my computer and reinstalled it, but nada (it doesn't say "open door" anymore, though, but just says "ready"). Nothing is working.

It will print a test page using the printer control panel, but it won't print one if sent from my computer. And it won't print any kind of document--Word, Excel, web page, etc.

Can't afford to buy a new printer right now, so if I can save this one, I'd prefer it!

can you do a screen dump / print screen? Can you print from any program, or from the internet? If the problem is that you can't print from Word, etc it could be a driver error in the Word software
My only complaint was that if they need to charge me $30 because they're robbing the duck to pay the boar they might as well give me a more substantial portion of flour, water, and bits of meat.

Can't print from anything, even with "print screen"!

It was working fine and it printed the first side of document I was printing (I was doing a manual duplex print job--does that sound dirty?), but when I returned the paper to print the second side, it sucked up about 5 or 6 pages at once, and got stuck. It took awhile to get it out, but after I did, the printer stopped printing except for test pages using the printer control panel. I even unplugged it (both the power and from my computer) for about 30 minutes hoping it would reset, but no such luck.

I will do research on Word driver errors. I did notice that when I send something to print, if I check properties, the document is listed. However, under "status" it's blank and to the left of the document name, the little icon is one of those "unknown program" icons you get when you have a document created using a program you don't have. Usually it would have the MSWord icon or similar.

Rona, Try shuffling (aerating) the paper or replacing the paper being loaded with fresh paper, then reboot and see what happens.

The reshuffling thing didn't work, but thanks for the advice! It wasn't showing that paper wasn't loading properly, but it just acted as though the printer didn't have any documents to print, although under printer properties, it showed my documents were queued for printing.

@Rail Paul--I looked up Windows printer driver errors, and found a fix involving installing a Test printer as the default printer, then reinstating my printer as the default. I tried it, and it worked! The fix was under "The Windows Registry Has a Damaged Default Printer Entry", whatever that means.

Thanks for your help!
