Anybody have any experience with these? One of my DVD players, an older Sony, is on its last legs. Not ready to commit to HD or Blu-ray yet, and at $169 the DV-980H (the model I'm thinking of getting) isn't terribly expensive. OPPO players have gotten a lot of good buzz recently, but it's not a brand I'm familiar with.

I just bought an upconverting Samsung DVD player, pretty happy so far, though I am tempted by the region free-ness of HD-DVD.

You can play any DVD from anywhere in the world in it.

Is the general consensus that it will be HD and not Blu-Ray?

i don't really keep up with the discussion, but last i paid attention blu-ray seemed to be a better bet. hd-dvd's got nomenclature on its side.

Blu-ray has the ps3 on it's side, so it's an ok bet it will win, but right now no one is winning at all. I want HD-DVD to win because it is region free, and also because it's the standard set by the DVD Forum, the standards setting body for this sort of thing. Sony decided that not enough of their IP was going into the spec and so took their ball and went home which really irks me.

Does a bluray disc play on a standard DVD player?

Nope, neither blu-ray nor hd-dvd will play on regular dvd players, wrong colour laser.

Went ahead and got the Oppo -- bought it direct from the manufacturer. Will report back on the up-converting when I get an HDTV to hook it up to (I know, I know ... soon) but even attached to a normal CRT Wega it's a definite improvement over the Sony unit it replaced. Build quality seems good, it plays both NTSC and PAL DVDs without a hitch (including discs the finicky Sony routinely scoffed at loading) and is as full-featured as I could want.

A P.S. on multiregion DVD players. There are remotes available through eBay for a few dollars/pounds that will easily reprogram restricted DVD players to read any region. I recently bought one to reprogram my fairly new Panasonic HDD/DVD writer and it worked perfectly. You have to be certain that you get one that's programmed for your particular make and model; a good dealer will offer advice if you need it. If it's a writer, it will of course continue to write to the regional standard it was set for.
