Compared to a Nano, it's too big.
The interface is unnecessarily complicated.
I don't want all that visual stuff. I don't want to flip through pictures of album covers.
The original iPod design (as carried through on the Nano) was incredibly elegant: it did what it had to do, and no more, with ease and style.
I think the Touch goes over the top with stuff that just isn't necessary, and which gets in the way.
(ETA: And I'm PISSED OFF that they didn't come out with a 16 GB Nano.)

Why do you prefer the Touch interface? I'm serious: I can't see how it's preferable to the clickwheel.

The iPod Touch strikes me as a clever, short-term, use of the iPhone box, for people who still think that the various functions of mobile telephones and mp3/4 devices are somehow distinct. In a year's time, or less, it will be hard to imagine any reason why such technologies should be separate. Strange as it may seem, the iPod Touch is the end of the line for iPods.

is flash memory not more susceptible to failure than a hard-disk drive?

Melonious, it's all your fault actually. On your advice I went to the Apple Store to check out the docking systems for my sister. Good god that store is dangerous. I had planned to stay and play for a bit but I feared for my wallet and left after only 30 minutes. But I couldn't stop thinking about the iPod touch. In all honesty I really needed an iPod (yes I'm the last person in the world without one, I'm such a late adopter).
Anybody else have one? I'm sure I'll have tons of questions but the first one is what kind of case should I get for it?

I love my new Touch iPod!
I bought the clear "crystal" sheets that use static electricity to cover the screen and the back. They are easier to clean and protect the surfaces from getting scratched. I carry mine in a soft leather pouch that a hand made briar pipe came in. It is flexible, soft and hold the ipod and the ear thingys. I think puting in a case destroys the incredible thinness and elegance of the thing. I love slipping it in my t-shirt pocket when I am on the exercise bike or riding the subway. You probably have a small suede bag or soft leather pouch that will fit just fine. I hate the cases that they sell for it.
Now that I have "fixed" the glitch with my computer, and installed the newest update to the iPod software, it works great. I love the different ways to index and select what you want to play. The battery has good life, and the sound seems to be even better than my two-year old model. I have put nearly 60 CDs on it already. and still have over 5 gig room.
I've been downloading from the Amazon site as well as iTunes. They charge $1 less per CD and .10 less per song than iTunes and the system works exactly the same. Just that their library is not as extensive as iTunes. But that's ok. I also have been downloading many of my CDs to iTunes and transferring them to my iPod. Between my three iPods, I have about 300 CDs on those little digital wonders.
Now I am downloading podcasts. Amazing technology for listening late at night in bed. or while driving.
What did you buy for your sister?

Re: my sister. In the end, I decided that because she was so enthusiastic about the Bose that I'd get her an Apple gift certificate and let her know about the one that you found as well. Given the info, she can decide.
