Rather than revive the old iPod thread, a new one! To wit:

iPod Touch in 8 and 16 GB flavors at $300 and $400, respectively. Has wifi to access the WiFi iTunes store, communicate with Starbucks, and surf, etc. Available later this month worldwide.

ETA: Hands-on from Engadget.
ETA 2: The Giz has a video hands-on in case you've never seen/used an iPhone.

The iPhone 4GB is killed and the iPhone 8GB is encheapened to $400. It also gets WiFi iTunes and Starbucks. Discuss at the iPhone thread, I guess. Or vent here if the iPhone thread is a bit dense for it.

Also, iPod video => iPod Classic. 80GB for $250, 160 gb for $350. In stores this weekend.

And the iPod nano becomes the iPod "fatty" with a QVGA screen. 4GB at $150, 8GB at $200. In stores this weekend.

Amazing.

Now that I recently bought a nano of course.

But now that I have the iPhone...what do I need the nano for? I could sell it. I have a shuffle. I never use it.

The official pages:

iPod nano.

iPod classic.

iPod touch. Battery life looks like it might be with the radio off, so caveat emptor.

And a Which iPod are you? page.

Wait. The IPod touch has Wifi -- does that mean you can use it for internet radio?

I don't know. Right now its main use is for Safari and the iTunes WiFi store. Lemme look around...

ETA: I can't find anyone doing Shoutcast with an iPhone, so I imagine not. Omni, can you stream them on your iPhone?

ETA 2: I'm guessing my few mutual fund investments won't do well today. Most carry AAPL.

Isn't that price cut (and killing the 4GB version) a major F-U to all those loyal geeks who stood in line? Suckers.

If anything, it confirms that waiting for the first couple waves to pass is the smart thing to do...

Edit: The pricing is a little weird -- they pretty much say the phone and camera together (plus a couple more features) are only worth $100.

Would anyone care to listen to some 78's, 45's, 33's or those new-fangled eight-tracks? I play them on my needlepod (at least the records).

Is Apple the new Microsoft? Are we allowed to hate them now?

apple has always been microsoft. just with a worse business plan.

so, it turns out they do price drops after all. nothing new, of course--the price of the last ipod dropped $25 right after i bought it (though amazon were kind enough to refund me the difference).

no...live streaming is pretty processor intensive...same reason they don't have flash (and the fact that it'd compete with the itunes store).

I think Apple Support has collapsed due to the angry iPhone mobs.

a 35% price drop 2 months after introduction is NOT standard.

and neither did I stand in line. I bought it a month ago. I'm livid. (albeit, I could see them offering something to early adopters in a day or so).

the pricing's not that strange.

the phone's not worth much and an integrated cellphone camera costs literally pennies to make (the quality is so shit).

DSLRs are so expensive because of the size of the imaging sensor, not the processing units or the number of megapixels (its the pixel size that matters for quality, not the number of pixels....as a practical matter)

you're the one who says apple doesn't do price drops, right? you should just live in denial. pretend it didn't happen.

There have been (apocryphal?) reports of getting $100 credits thru Apple phone support complaining. I imagine something like that will be announced anon. Also, I imagine CC companies with price guarantees could be a resource.
