Folks, sorry if this in the wrong location (I'm sure an Admin will move it to the correct one).
A dear friend and her SO are visiting Savannah in a few weeks time and I wondered if you could help with recommendations?
Thanks in advance.
Anny

I do believe this should be down south. I also believe we have some previous threads.

Well, okay, one anyway.

Tell her that under no circumstances should she visit The Lady and Sons OR Uncle Bubba's Oyster House. ;) If anyone involved in any restaurant is named Deen or Hiers, avoid the place, no matter how much the locals talk it up.

Dee and I have visited Savannah twice. My preference is for Elizabeth's on 37th in an elegant old home on a tree shaded street of similar old homes. I believe ownership changed in 2004, and I haven't been there since. Elizabeth

Sapphire Grill

The traditional place for midday dining was Mrs. Wilkes' boardinghouse, with communal tables and all you can eat lunches. I believe it closed and reopened following the founder's death. I don't know if it has remained open

There are many local tours built around the "Midnight in the Garden" book, and local boy Johnny Mercer.

If your friends have time, a drive up the coastline to Hilton Head Island, or farther on for a stay in Charleston might be nice.

My only complaint was that if they need to charge me $30 because they're robbing the duck to pay the boar they might as well give me a more substantial portion of flour, water, and bits of meat.

Hey, Anny is a Brit. Give her a break.

Do you know where Sheffield is, for instance? <_<

In case it isn't among the recommendations already given, please devote some time to visiting the grand old homes downtown which are open to the public. There are plenty of them.

to add to your list..in Savannah, the Pink House is very nice. There's a really nice pub downstairs. Beautiful building on one of the squares in the historical district.

A short drive from Savannah..Bluffton..Inn at Palmetto Bluffs..beautiful spot on the May River and a chance to experience the low country..several dining options.

I spend a lot of time in Savannah, as my wife is from there. That means that, when I'm down there, we usually eat at my in-laws' rather than at restaurants, but I do have a few recommendations.

I can't recommend anywhere in Savannah for fine dining; for example, I'd recommend against Elizabeth's. I've been there once and was very disappointed. The food was heavy, over-salted and just not that interesting. The sense I have is that it's gone downhill since Elizabeth Terry left. But maybe it was an off night, or maybe it has improved since then.

Not sure what Suzanne's beef is with the Lady and Sons; I've gone a few times, and it has always been fine. The food is pretty good, (though not so good as to warrant waiting for hours to get in.) I like their fried chicken and biscuits, for example. And a benefit of the ridiculous lines at the restaurant is that the turnover at the buffet is really quick; I'd recommend that. For good southern-- new southern, I guess-- food, though, I really like Sweet Potatoes (which, however, is farther away from downtown, in a strip mall). And for years (most recently in this NY Times piece from a month back) I've been hearing about the lunch at the United House of Prayer for All People. It's supposed to be outstanding.

Probably my favorite spot during the summer is the Crab Shack, on the road to Tybee Island (Savannah's beach). Totally casual and relaxed, and a great place for crab or (even better) the low country shrimp boil.

If your friend wants barbecue, the best spot is Sweet Leaf, downtown. Savannah isn't a BBQ mecca, but they're pretty good.

My friend didn't like the food at The Pink House. Said the downstairs bar was good. She found a few places that were better. I'm seeing her next week so I'll find out more then.
