I spent about a minute looking over someone's shoulder at the ATT store.
The iPhone looks pretty damn good.
Someone here must have it already...

In the paper today there's a story about a local woman who has her own business: she hired university students to stand in line for 10 dollars an hour so that they could snag 16 for her. She's keeping one for herself and using the other 15 as incentives for her employees.

I played with one in the store today. Pretty impressive, though the EDGE network was frustratingly slow at times. Typing on the virtual "keyboard" is surprisingly easy, even with fat little fingers.

They were sold out, but could accept orders to be shipped direct (overnight) on Monday, so with luck mine will arrive on Tuesday.

$500 for the device + $60 / month at a minimum, or so the media say. Wish I had that kind of spare change.

Yeah, it's pretty much a silly indulgence. I "justify" it (in my own mind) by pointing out that it's a nice little ipod and has rather nice internet features (even if the EDGE network is slow-ish, as noted).

I already have an ipod, but rarely carry it with me because the combination of ipod and cell phone is too much. The iPhone is slim enough to drop into my shirt pocket. I don't care for those belt-clips that many people use for their cells. Just a personal preference.

The Google Maps, Weather, and YouTube apps are quite slick. If you've ever played with Dashboard widgets on a Mac these will seem familiar. The finger scrolling is a cinch to master, as is the split-finger zooming. It's a cool toy.

Yes, another gadget we don't have and can't afford. Yet.
Hmmm. Could I write it off?

And now we know exactly why those features are on the iPhone:

iPhone ready for porn, thanks to Digital Playground

It's not surprising that someone's already been thinking about using the iPhone's gorgeous 3.5 inch shiny colour screen to display porn.

Enter Digital Playground, who are "pleased to announce an early alliance to Apple's iPhone with 158 full-length trailers available free of charge, for immediate download."

As if that weren't enough for horny commuters, Adult DVD Empire will offer complete hardcore scenes for the iPhone.

Jeff Rix, Founder of Adult DVD Empire says, “We’re thrilled to offer the first adult content for iPhone. This is a perfect partnership for us, and we’re proud to be on board with Digital Playground.” Mike Barry, Director of Adult Operations says, “It only makes sense that the first iPhone adult content is available from Digital Playground, they are always one step ahead of the game. This is a huge step forward in adult entertainment, and as time goes on I believe that the demand for mobile content will skyrocket.”

I was seriously, seriously tempted. Regrettably, my entire company uses T-Mobile and I didn't want to have to buy a whole new plan just for me. Also, I'm patient enough to wait out for the second iteration, knowing darn well that six months from now they will have fixed many of the bugs and complaints.

My friend, Tom, got one though. He is thrilled.

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007...hone_price.html

Would you pay $499 for Apple's new iPhone? Apple is betting you will, but if not the computer maker has plenty of room to make you a deal. In fact, iSuppli, a market research firm, predicts Apple will quickly cut iPhone's price.

The reason is simple. According to iSuppli, Apple will take advantage of the "must-have" buzz surrounding its new gadget to try and get at least $499 for it, but would have a 50 percent gross profit margin at that price. Price cuts, they say, are inevitable.

I'll wait ....

EddieL, I hope you report back soon. Is it charging now?
I want to hate it but I can't. I'd love one.

Excuse me, but we are not "cheap". We are "value oriented". Say it proudly, child!

Now I don't know whether to get a practical new blackberry curve or this thing. I suspect trying to type in Hebglish on it is not going to be a joyful experience.

It drives me nuts when my Blackjack has to go on an Edge signal, I can't imagine having to give up 3G and deal with that aspect of the phone. Are they planning on going to 3G in the future?

I tend not to be one who gets caught up in hype, but I want one as well. They seem so cool. But, since I'm practical, I'm going to wait to a good long while.
