Are there any not to be missed in this area?

Tom Jenkins Barbecue. Communal seating at picnic tables, rolls of paper towels in lieu of napkins, etc., but it's good.

I don't think there are any "not to be missed" in the area. That being said, if you're there, you have to eat. Here's a few we generally enjoy.
second Tom Jenkins
On Los Olas..Chima is a Brazilian rodizio..all you can eat..easily the best version of this type of restaurant I've experienced..high quality foods in a nice environment..go hungry. Lunch is a bargain.
Mark's on Los Olas and Johnny V's are 2 of the "older" high end FLL dining spots. If you're accustomed to high end NYC dining, you'll be disappointed..but these are 2 of the original FL/Carib restaurants and still turn out creative food.
Taverna Opa has decent to good Greek food..early evening is family oriented..as the night wears on, the music gets louder..and it becomes a scene...often people will be dancing on the tables; but the food is good. There are 2 locations..I've only been to the 1 on the ICW.
Bahia Cabana Bar...Cheers on the water..burgers, grouper sandwiches, steak tips..casual, nice spot overlooming the Bahia Marina.
All but Tom Jenkins and Chima are accessible by the FLL Water taxi..and a nice way to spend a day or night..cruising the ICW

My only complaint was that if they need to charge me $30 because they're robbing the duck to pay the boar they might as well give me a more substantial portion of flour, water, and bits of meat.

We were just in the area for a week and had not-bad meals at Mark's Las Olas (the prix fixe was a good value) and at Trina (in the Atlantic Hotel, right across A1A from the beach in FL; Don Pintabona is the consulting chef, so I figured we'd find something decent if not spectacular to eat.). Actually, they were better than not bad, although the setting at Trina helped a great deal -- nice shady outdoor seating, raised above street level so we could see the water, and a strong breeze to keep it cool. This was Sunday brunch, and the flatbreads (one with mushrooms and taleggio[?], one with lamb) were very good. Also very big; one would have been sufficient for the two of us, especially after sharing a chopped salad with shrimp. Interesting drinks list. I wouldn't say "don't miss it" but it was a good place for its time and purpose.
The dishes at Mark's were fairly busy, but all tasty. My sauteed scallop app and veal tenderloin wrapped in prosciutto were quite good. Everyone (us, soi-disant-gourmet brother in law, sister in law, and niece) enjoyed the meal, so it was a success.

My current favorites
3030 Ocean (Seafood, excellent, shockingly in a Marriott)
Four Rivers (high end French Thai)
If you are in Hollywood and don't want to schlep, Chef Allen is pretty good these days (after a bad spell)
