See the big tree in front of the house in the middle?

It fell down. I need to pick something to replace it.

I'm considering one of those red silky japanese maples. or maybe another silver maple. or oak who knows.

any suggestions?

First of all, it was in a pretty stupid spot. Don't replace it. Add others on the left of the property. Maples are fine.

No. Luckily, it didn't hit anything.

Sounds like a dessert at Per Se or something.

Rebecca's right. Nothing. Get rid of all those little shrubs and things too.

Nice house, with nice mature plantings. Edit, rather than add.

I've considered leaving it open and removing the small shrubs by the babbling brook. But I really like those red japanese trees.
Not sure what to do with the beds closer to the house. I hate what's there now. (It's all left over from the former owner.) I have been remiss with the landscaping.

Thanks, Robert, for the compliment. That tree looked like it had toes and could scamper around the neighborhood after dark. I do not understand any tree that is not pretty or useful. Lucky it didn't fall on the house. It doesn't look like it was used for shade for passive cooling and its trunk from ground to first limbs are bare, like having a palm tree. Might as well just plant a telephone pole in the yard. OK. So easy to poke fun. Lovely house, though. You have a babbling brook. Very boring front yard. I'd turn it into a meadow unless you are heavy duty croquet players. Also, I do not have a clue about your planting zone. And I understand your yearn for Japanese maples. I have two and the colors of new hybrids, the brilliant reds, are so stunning. There are many, many to choose from but I'd find a local horticultural expert in your area and get advice first.
