I borrowed a Samsung SCL901 camcorder to record a lecture and cooking demo. I have about 3 hours of footage and I need to create a 10-15 minute best of CD.
Do I copy it onto a DVD on my tv and then edit with Nero Start Smart on my computer?
The editing can look like a home job. Although, I'd rather it didn't.

Editing video footage

Since that's an analog videocamera (hi 8) according to google, you will need to digitize the footage. If you have the right video card, and cords, you can go from the camera onto your computer but my guess is you won't have that since it's a rather specialized item.
Burning a dvd will work, but you will lose the time code marks that happen everytime you stop the camera which means that instead of getting your footage in separate shots, you get all in one continuous clip that you have to separate yourself.
The good thing about burning the dvd though is that you can cull your footage before you start to edit. In other words, if there's obviously bad stuff you know you're not going to use, don't bother putting it on the dvd and then onto your hard drive.
What I would do is burn a dvd of all your footage, then watch it over and over and take notes on the footage. You want to look at your camera original tapes as few times as possible. You run the risk of dropouts and breakage every time it plays and the image will degrade if played often enough.
Then once you have a good idea of what you want to work with, burn another dvd of just those shots. And then put that onto your hard drive and edit. If I remember correctly, you get about 4 minutes of video per gigabyte. So digitizing 180 minutes would take about 45 gigs. Video editing is very demanding on your hardware too, so you don't want to fill your hard drive to it's full capacity. Also, the more stuff you have, the harder it is to keep track of it and organize it.
I haven't heard anything about that program, sorry. But Windows moviemaker isn't bad and it's free. So if Nero doesn't do what you need, you might try that.

Never assume animosity when stupidity could be the cause.
Whichever side you're on, the other side doesn't just have bad ideas, they have to be bad people too.
People like her are always scared. It’s a lonely world when you’re just so damned right and everyone else is so stupid. That’s why God made cats.
