external or internal? Get a combo CD/DVD burner. Internal shouldn't cost more than $300. Sony is a good brand.

I prefer external. I have a computer right now that I use for food related projects. I'm planning on getting another one for video work next year.

I think $300 is a bit high.

If you don't need it to be slim or fancy looking, I'd recommend something like the Lite-On SHW-160P6SU or . SOHW-1673SU-1635 These are an update of a more prevalent Lite-On drive, the SHW-1673SU.

The main difference is the 160P/1635 add support for DVD-R DL writing and writing to DVD+R DL at 8x rather than 4x. But, for most people dual-layer burning is useless since the blanks are so expensive. Regular DVD blanks, though, are cheap enough that I mainly use them over CD-Rs now. If the DL stuff doesn't matter, the older one might be fine for your needs. I've seen it at Newegg for around $70, the newer ones are around $100. And, they come with Nero which is always a plus.

Note, though, that Lite-On is not about style. The drive is usually good, but the package around it is usually just good enough to get it to work. And it can be biiiiiig too. This isn't a slimline drive.

ETA: The dimensions are 9.6" x 6.8" x 2.6" and the interface is USB 2.0.

I have a Lite-On model and it's been great and it was cheap. But it's a stand alone model, not part of the computer. Is that what you wanted, little The Scream? Or an external drive for your computer?

Stand alone is fine. Maybe preferable, considering how many computers we have at home.

Thanks!

I got mine well over a year ago at Costco for $130. If you can wait for delivery, TheMatt's suggestion seems good.

It's very easy to use. I used to use re-recordable DVDs and save Judge Judy and Starting Over daily. I was very fulfilled. Now, Starting Over has been cancelled and Judy has lost a little of her light, and I sit alone watching the petals fall of off the dead roses of my youth.

Soooooooooooooooooooooo

I asked for the cheapest one. Sony CD-R/Rw for $54.00. Forgot to ask for the cheapest stand alone. Too late to go back to store. So I installed it. Cleaned out all the dust bunnies inside my computer. I was afraid of blowing up my CPU the entire time. Cursed myself for marrying a chef rather than someone who can actually do things around the house besides cooking and cleaning. Anyway it's working and I've also realized that cooking and cleaning need to be done everyday, but the computer stuff is once in a blue moon. Besides chefs are more charming than computer guys.

I remember buying my first burner and I think it was 300-400 bucks. Blank cds were 2.50. It only worked half the time. The future looked marvelous.
