My iTunes librabry is filling the hard drive on my main G4. I have a large capacity external hard drive in the system. Can I transfer my existing library to it and keep[ it active/ How do I do this?

Yes you can do this.
Go to iTunes preferences/advanced and locate your iTunes music folder (probably in your users/your name/music folder). Cope the folder iTunes and paste it into your external hard drive. Once it has copied, and it may take a while, enter the new location of your iTunes music folder (e.g. Woxter:Media:Music:iTunes) in the first field of iTunes preferences/advanced. Now close iTunes and restart your computer. Open iTunes and preferences/advanced again and see if the location of iTunes Music is still on your external drive. Play a few random tracks to see if they are actually playing of your external drive; i.e, is there any activity, lights or whatever. Now you should be safe to start deleting stuff from your iTunes folder on the internal hard drive, although you might want to burn it all on to DVD first, just to be on the safe side.

I have successfully moved the library to the Maxtor drive and tested it. The library is also on one of my iPods. I assume the iPod will still be synched to this computer, no matter the location of the iTunes folder, yes?
So I think I can reverse the process and transfer the library back to the computer from the iPod. Do you think it still would be wise to transfer to a DVD as well?

What's an itune?

This can be done but you need to enable disk use on the iPod and use some extra software (iPodDisk) since iTunes won't let you upload music from iPod to computer. Also, if you haven't successfully relocated your iTunes Music folder you run the risk of synching the iPod with an empty folder; in other words you wipe your iPod clean. Personally, I would back up my music just to be on the safe side.

actually, on a pc it can be done quite easily via itunes itself. enable disk mode, open the ipod folder and set to view hidden files. the library on the ipod then shows up. copy it all over into a new folder and import into itunes. i know because i just downloaded my entire ipod library onto mrs. jones' computer. apple just makes it annoying by hiding your library and then organizing it in a way that makes no sense till it is imported into itunes.
