I've been strongly hinted to that a telescope would be a swell gift for my parents. I'm overwhelmed by the choice and scope on telescopes.com (yes, Virginia, there is a website) and was wondering if any sky gazers could offer recommendations or purchasing strategies.
Many thanks in advance.

Really, people will tell you all kinds of garbage. Don't believe it.

We walked by a store on the UES the other day, with so many in the window. Some were huge, some not, and some were 'vintage.' Maybe somebody know the store I'm talking about.

I've been considering one for a few years now. But fortunately, like the big-screen flat panel tv, I've been able to come to my senses before purchasing yet another unnecessary and expensive toy.

That said, I think it would be a great gift.

That said, I have no helpful information for you.

Great tip on B&H. I can tell you I'd love to drop $30,000 on one, but thankfully I'll be satisfied with the $59.95. Who knew NASA shopped there?

Ok, you are simultaneously shopping for a telescope and a powerful cutting device. What's really going on?

If I mentioned "Hale Bopp" would that help?

There may soon be a pretty good secondhand model coming on the market.

Maybe sending Abby's mom out to some yard sales would be worthwhile then.

I bought my father a telescope at B&H. The in-store selection is huge, and the staff was quite helpful. They had a number of "floor samples" marked down to pretty impressive prices
My only complaint was that if they need to charge me $30 because they're robbing the duck to pay the boar they might as well give me a more substantial portion of flour, water, and bits of meat.
