Do you get the feeling that Apple controls prices and one day we'll be suing them and getting some money back? I used to work at a company who did this and if you discounted the items, suddenly you'd get really crappy shipping and couldn't sell. Isn't this all price-fixing? Is it possible to discuss this without politics? I think so.

If I understand what you're saying, you're suggesting that Apple may take some sort of retaliatory measures against anyone who sells Apple products for less than the MSRP. This may be true. I don't know if that's legal or not.

But it isn't price fixing. Price fixing is an antitrust issue, and it occurs when two or more manufacturers of different but competing products set prices with each other to avoid price competition that would benefit consumers.

Costco sells ipods now. Not much cheaper than the apple store, from what I remember.

Are you thinking of getting one? If so, wait until Monday at least. With WWDC06 next week, the rumor sites are going nuts.

That said, if you do purchase one this weekend, that would pretty much guarantee a new iPod next week. Hmm.

I think the general feeling on the rumor sites is that a new iPod will not be annouced until September sometime. This is a typical report. Apple usually uses their developers conference to focus on pro-level products anyway. You can read some of the speculation on the Nano update here.

the ipod 6g will be announced soon. how do i know? well, i just ordered my 30 gig 5g.

all the rumors seem to suggest that the next big change will be in video capabilities, and really i don't have any desire to watch video on a tiny screen for 2 hours. i am quite pissed about the fact that so many 4g accessories don't work with the 5g. if microsoft did this the mac community would be smugly, gleefully critical. i guess i'll be taking the 4g pod that mrs. jones is inheriting to any interviews i conduct. if the car-lighter power adapter doesn't work either i'm going to really be annoyed.

does anyone know if there is a cassette tape adapter for the 5g? i really don't want to go the fm transmitter route--it doesn't work very well with our car.

I actually like the video screen. I find it very useful when shopping with my wife in Bergdoff Goodman. I have downloaded Bourdain's "No Rez" and find it very easy to watch.

Cassette tape adapters work off a standard audio jack (at least both of mine did; so did my husband's). So unless Apple really wigged out and fit a proprietary audio port to the new iPods (doubtful) you should be okay.

What you really need is a new car – one that has a built-in audio port.

New Nanos are smaller, have higher capacities for the same price, and come in more colors.

New Video iPods have brighter screens, more capacity, and longer battery life.

New Shuffles (available in October) are much smaller, have an aluminum enclosure, and built-in clip to attach to clothing.

they also annouced a WiFi set top box to wirelessly stream movies and video to your TV. Available early next year.

well, no features that i care about but the new 30gig ipods are $25 cheaper. so if i can find my original packaging my 5g is going back to amazon tomorrow.
