I do like the lights, holiday displays, etc. aspect of Christmas--it makes the cold a little more cheery. After New Year's there's nothing but 2+ months of dreary winter. And since I have to sing a holiday concert each year, I've learned to accept Christmas music.
I can live without the rampant commercialism though, and having to explain that no, my family does not give presents on Chanukah (other than a small token gift when we were kids and chocolate coins) and no, we didn't have a Chanukah bush.

I can't stand the "holiday" season. Adding to my delight when it is over, immediately after New Year's Day, is my awareness of the lengthening of the day.

I have mixed feelings about the "Holiday Season". Some aspects I enjoy very much, others not so much. I do really enjoy winter though. I like all cold-weather sports, dressing in warm clothes, and the types of cuisine that go with cold weather.

I do like getting together with family and friends for good food and drink and although pretty much a heathen I enjoy the music at Christmas Eve church services. I can do without the rampant commercialism, frenzied crowds, false cheer and crap television. And I just hate the forced levity of New Years Eve. One of the best times I ever had on NY Eve was last year-- going to the movies, then six of us sitting in a friends apartment drinking good champagne and eating Chinese takeout while their toddler oohed and aahed over the Christmas tree.
And yes, winter food's the best--cassoulet, choucroute, stews, roasts, gratins.

Nah. You can get food and drink all year round. Nothing is any longer sufficiently special that I save it for Christmas. Most of the music is lousy, and you can't escape from it. Winter food makes you fat. Everything's closed. And don't get me started on New Year's Eve: the unnerving spectacle of people laughing in the face of the unstoppable passage of time.

I rarely covet a steaming dish of cassoulet in early August when the blinding sun is out until 9 pm, the temperature is hovering in the mid-90's, and the humidity is suffocating.
I like a fire in the fireplace, some hearty food on the table, and a warm glass of armagnac in my hand.

Having to read and digest offering memoranda and execute subscription agreements for three hedge funds simultaneously. This is not exactly compelling stuff. And my boss is of the "I'll throw it on her desk and let her figure it out and deal with it" school of management. I am drowning in a sea of excrutiatingly boring documents.

On the subject of 'cliquey douchebag, fucking sycophantic morons', I realize that the crowning achievement of internet food site participants is to share a table with Jay Rayner, so here is the British Anthony Bourdain giving a masterclass in 'showing the fig' to Britain's Ferran Adria:

Ordering something and then having it not turn up.
I ordered some DVDs from Amazon a couple of weeks ago to be sent to my work address; 10 days later and they still hadn't arrived. I e-mailed them and they sent out a replacement order which reached me the next day. Have ordered the Want Two CD by Rufus Wainwright from CDWOW and they sent that out on saturday, today is wednesday and it's still not here! I'll give it until friday and then I suppose another call is in order.

I mean cynical on the part of Rayner. As he's so fond of saying, his job is to sell papers, but quite how shilling for one's mates achieves this is not clear. What is clear though is that Rayner does not feel restrained by decorum or ethics in doing so in the context of a national newspaper (do this on Chowhound or eGullet and, unless you're a moderator, you'd be ripped apart).
And I mean sinister, because Rayner is right. Nobody does care.

Considering that the Whitechapel sorting office is one of the main ones for London it really wouldn't surprise me if it was a 'missing post' hotspot.
I just think that it is awful that you can't trust that your post will get from A to B because it might be stolen by the very people whose job it is to deliver it!

Whitechapel is indeed the very worst - see

At least it was only CDs though. I was sent a new credit card (which I wasn't expecting - my old one wasn't due to expire for another three months) which never arrived. I only realised when I got my next statement and found that someone had spent 600 quid in sports shops across London
