FDNY are out in force on first avenue opposite the hospital -- the fire is in the tunnels which go directly beneath.

Can somebody please explain to me why, at the little deli across from my office, a banana is 30 cents and a small cup of coffee is 75 cents?

A bargain compared to Starbucks.

I didn't mean that the coffee is expensive - I just don't understand the difference in price between the banana and the coffee.
I never ever never ever get coffee at Starbuck's.
Lippy
Sep 28 2004, 01:34 PM
I see what you mean, taking into account both cost per pound and labor. For 75 cents a small cup of deli coffee, they should throw in a banana.

Badly bruised shoulder and knee from a spill last Friday - I tripped over a pile of wet floor mats in the bakery kitchen. I should keep a pair of treaded shoes in the office.

The price of a large espresso at Bar Italia in London's Soho has reached two pounds fifty, which is almost five dollars at current rates. And a large espresso is still a pretty small coffee. I suspect the owners of Bar Italia have become millionaires selling what is basically a very small amount of hot water. Their coffee is excellent, but the cost per cup must be miniscule.

Lonely people are obviously willing to part with a lot of money for the solace and companionship offered by a large espresso.

That's even more impressive than the $4.25 cappuccino (in a paper cup_ at the coffee shop in Dag H. park.

I sympathize, but at least you have a plausible excuse. Saturday I tripped over my own feet and scraped my left elbow, then Sunday I fell up some stairs and bruised both knees.

I've been saving this one up until I calmed down, which has taken about twenty hours.
Went home without my keys last night. Had to return to the office to collect them. That means doing my commute three times in immediate succession, surrounded by all the additional chaos of tunnel fires and what have you. I was not a happy man last night.

My sympathies. I've done that. Without the fires of course.

Leaving the gym this afternoon, this thirty-somthing up-to-date type holds the door oh so graciously for the very attractive young Asian woman ahead of me. Then he looks at me, turns his back, and lets the door close in my face. In the reasons to be cheerful department, I'm pretty sure he heard me when I muttered "asshole" sotto voce.

What's with all the sizing in new dish towels? It takes, like, 20 washings before they'll actually dry anything...and I'm talking 100% cotton here. I'm considering starting to buy up dish towels and launder them heavily in anticipation of some future drying requirement...

Politics aside, I was amazed by the number of debate parties going on in bars around the neighborhood, complete with fancy dress and baloons. Is that a new tradition, or did I just not notice it last time?

Everyone I know was watching the debate -- either alone with a bottle of wine like me, or with a gang of friends. I didn't notice parties (see bottle of wine alone) but I heard a lot about parties too.

V, I empathize. Stuck at home today because the sinusitis always settles in my inner ear, and I can't walk down the street without weaving. Can't hear out of the left one in any case.
Doc said I could have surgery to clean out the sinuses, but 1) it's quite painful and 2) results are mixed.
