since it is in the "annoyances" thread i'm assuming the acceptance part was also an error. if so, this really sucks. it reminds me of a time when i was invited to a campus as a finalist, only the invitation sent to me was addressed to someone else. they insisted it was a simple error and that i was indeed a finalist but the whole time i was there i couldn't shake the feeling that i wasn't supposed to have been. later they didn't even bother to write me to tell me that i hadn't got the job.

sorry, I guess I wasn't clear- I was NOT admitted to Berkeley (I haven't been rejected yet, either). Every applicant who applied to Berkeley received this email, but of course most of them have not been accepted and most of them won't be accepted.
What's worse is that this happened on a Friday afternoon of a 3 day weekend, so there are probably a bunch of people out there who can't check with the office until Tuesday and think they've been accepted (and are probably telling their friends and family). Berkeley sent a second "apology" email, but it was completely unclear and had no indication that it came from Berkeley except for the return email address, so I originally thought it was junk mail and did not connect the two emails.

There is no longer a NY exemption for solo proprietors. There hasn't been one for many years. The only two automatic exemptions are convicted felons (Rancho?) and caregivers of infants. Having to spend two hours chipping a solid two inches of ice off my car in -20 C + windchill weather today. It took over half an hour to get one of the doors open so I could start the damn thing. I know, I know, why do I live in bleeping Canada - but actually winter has been great up til now. (On the brighter side, I could skip my workout and not feel too guilty).
The storm that caused the ice shield on the car (a real doozy featuring rain, freezing rain, ice pellets, snow and thundersnow in the space of 24 hours) also caused my niece to be bumped off her flight and forced her to cancel her first ever visit to us. I haven't seen her or her kids in three years.

The length of excuse is dependent on whether you actually sat on a jury. Just showing up excuses you for 2 years. Sitting on jury grants you a 4-year waiver.
I just received a State Court questionnaire as well. Last time I was called I had to show up the same day as they started impaneling the jury for the Puffy trial. Fortunately, I was summoned to Civil court, not criminal.

But what is reasonable? So far, I've had one robbery, two DUI and a murder trial under my belt. I've sat on 4 juries. The murder trial was three and a half weeks. I've been called to jury duty 9 times, and most of those were under the old system where you are on call for 2 weeks and call each night to see if you're needed. Because the trials were not hung juries, the lawyers salivate when they interview me. I know many people who have never even been called for jury duty, let alone sit on a jury. This was a week of living hell and I am sooooooo behind I am going to pay for this for weeks. So what's fair? I get punished because I've already done my duty and because I drive and vote. I think I'll be ready to serve again in about 10 years when I'm 55. Untuil then, maybe they canb work out a system where they call everyone once before they call on me again.
Sorry to rant but it's been a really frustrating week.
