I got mine at Sur La Table (8x3) and a restaurant supply store (10x2). Sur La Table had the 10x2 one as well, but I went to the restaurant supply store first.

One of my T'giving guests called last night to ask if she could bring a friend - someone we've never met, with whom she just had a first date.
I was so taken aback I said yes.

Oh, I kind of had that -- guest called yesterday asking if it was okay to bring someone. But since I had already invited next-door-neighbor and agreen to his bringing 2 more, how could I say no?

So it's a good thing I bought another duck yesterday: 2 ducks for 6 people, plus calamari for 1 plus whoever wants, should be fine.

We are waiting for our new bed to be delivered here upstate. Delivery window was 9 - 11. They called at 11:30 saying the road to the house is too snowy. I'm looking right at the road. It is completely clean and sanded - and it did not snow here yesterday or overnight. We drove in last night at 11pm and the roads are completely clean. Then the dispatcher said they would call back in a few minutes. That was 40 minutes ago. I am supremely pissed off.

If I remember correctly, this was Sear's, no? Same group that promised a repairman for my washer between 9 - 5 one Thrusday and sent no one...when I called that evening, they said the guy had called three times during the day, looking for directions. Which is weird (read: bullshit), because I was home all day and kept the portable phone at my side the whole time & no one from Sears called. And even if I hadn't had the phone at my side, there's always caller ID...
They did reschedule, though, and made us the first stop of the day, at 8:30, and the repairman couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. Win some, lose some, I guess.

Similar thing here. Sears kept telling me the driver couldn't get to the house because the roads are too icy. Even though I'm looking out the window at completely cleared roads. In the end, I made enough of a fuss so that they put me in touch with the trucking company directly. Got a very, very nice guy who rescheduled us for first stop tomorrow morning, with a new truck crew - and I gave very clear instructions on how to get to our road from the main road and not via the small hill in the other direction.
Fingers crossed.

Nov 26 2005, 05:42 AM
Patience??? I was so pissed off that I forced Sears to let me talk to the trucking dispatcher (an outside contractor to Sears) directly. I refused to take no for an answer. Then I forced the trucking dispatcher to give me his name, the name of the trucking company, and their phone number so I don't have to talk to Sears again. If there's a problem tomorrow morning. Which there better not be.

My maintenance fee is going up by 9% in January. This is the 3rd rate increase in as many years, all due to rising fuel costs. (Of course, it might help if they didn't always run the heat so darn high.) And, unless it takes effect in December, the raise I was promised that was supposed to happen this month hasn't come through--those lying sons-of-bitches.
Anyone want to hire an editor?

you mean in your line of work people actually keep to their review deadlines? the 2-3 month decision window on a couple of articles i have out there in the ether ended 2 months ago. still no word. which is an annoyance, since if they get rejected i can expect a similar turnaround from wherever i send them next and then i'll be cutting it very fine come re-appointment time. which will be a bigger annoyance.

These are abstracts for the main annual meeting. Scores for about 3500 abstracts have to be collated for a planning meeting in early January so people will start squealing if I miss the deadline by much.
Journals are a bit more lax but they've been tightening up recently -- I get threatening emails if I haven't reviewed a paper within three weeks. Papers are generally reviewed within two months.
