My digital camera died in my hands today. I spent a good part of the afternoon at J & R, looking at the various models and left thoroughly confused.

i hear good things about the olympus c-770 and its sibling the c-765 ($100 cheaper, loses a couple of, to my mind, unnecessary features). i am considering the cheaper sibling myself. after reviewing my ladakh pictures i have determined i need a camera with a better zoom and better low-light capabilities.

Paul bought me a new optical mouse. He thought it would be a snap to hook it up. I wanted him to wait until after I had finished working on my current book -- multiple Word files that can take 30 minutes or more to open all together, so I have not been shutting off my computer, just saving the files at the end of the day and picking up again the next morning. I told him that if he DID want to install the new mouse this weekend, he should get up earlier than me and do it then, the implication being that he should NOT try to do it as "just one more thing before finally going to bed," because at 2 or 3am, he gets careless. The implication was lost on him. He installed the mouse around that time, fucked up and closed all my files, had to reopen them, fucked up one of them, etc. And didn't even reopen all that I had open before. (He also wiped the Google desktop search off, but at least that was easy for me to recover.) So not only did he screw up my stuff, he had to stay up at least an hour later than otherwise -- which he does way too often, and I worry about his health. sad.gif

And then this morning, when I found out what he had done, I was so upset that I inadvertently closed all the files again. blush.gif Which is why I have so much time to bitch here: I can't do ANYTHING Word-based while the files are reopening. dry.gif

I'm not sure whether I'm more upset about his staying up too late too often, sad.gif or that he screwed up my work. angry.gif

Ah -- looks as though the files are open again. smile.gif Back to work!

My oven died yesterday!!! While I was using it. I have no idea what happened. It was on. I roasted my beets. Made a noodle kugle. And at then it just died. I didn't realize it when I put the fish in because of the residual heat. But as I took it out I noticed the thermometer said 200F. Thank goodness for the toaster oven.

A note has already been left with the super. And Rosh Hashannah is two weeks off.

I don't know why they take so long, and the people at that particular publishing house don't know, unsure.gif but every book I've worked on from them has been the same: presumably the virus scan is what holds things up. (They probably use Macs, which we are seriously considering switching to.)

If I closed the files at the end of the day, I'd have to spend a half hour the next day waiting for them to open again -- not billable time. sad.gif So I leave them open, and leave the computer on, until I've finished the book.

As for Paul, he got a whole 6 hours of sleep last night, so that's a bit better. But he'll be away for the next week, and I won't be able to yell at him about his lousy habits. tongue.gif

Bloviatrix -- maybe it's just the internal thermostat? Very easy to replace. Wishing your oven a speedy recovery!

My digital camera died in my hands today. I spent a good part of the afternoon at J & R, looking at the various models and left thoroughly confused.

Hmm... No longer convinced that the camera is dead. It may just be that I need a new lithium battery. I've ordered a cheapie clone on-line "guaranteed" to work with my camera, so I'll be able to test it. Lithium batteries have a lifespan of 2-3 years, apparently, from the time of manufacture, not from the first use.

Here's what's annoying: I brought the camera with me to J & R, a store I normally trust, (and where it was originally purchased 1 1/2 years ago) and demonstrated the problem to a number of salesmen. They all said it was a mechanical problem that would cost a lot of money to repair. They also said that the Olympus 300 is out of production. That does not seem to be the case, according to the Olympus website. I understand that the store is in the business of selling, but, aren't they also interested in keeping customers? If the problem is solved with a new battery, the owner will hear from me. angry.gif

Lippy, I have had better experiences at B&H than at J&R...

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/

It's on 9th Ave. near 34th St.

Steve R.
Since B&H opened, J&R has been history to me. I stopped going there for audio and video stuff years ago, after similar repair issues; now, there's no need for them at all, as far as I'm concerned. I like B&H, but only in NY would a place like that not be the subject of a million photos itself.

Screamie started translating ingredient lists into French. The probelm she has a problem with plural and singular in French. Now she's demanding I fix it first thing this morning. Of course I should have just done it to begin with for at least a few recipes and then she would have had a simple template to follow.

The NYTs has started charging for editorials, news analysis and other good features. I can't really be annoyed as I'm shocked I have had free access to this for as long as I have. I'm often able to get access anyway. Sometimes googling the title of an article yields a link to a cached version, which the Times seems slipshod at protecting. Other times I find a link to another newspaper that picked up the story.

LA Times has done this on selected content, but then has relented on some. Most entertainment stuff has a fee. Initially most food stuff did, but now most of it seems to be free. I doubt they'd ever try to charge for op-ed stuff (I understand the NYT is gonna charge for Krugman & Brooks) cuz nobody would pay.

People who forward whatever crap arrives in their email, as long as it says "forward this to everyone you know."

In just the past week, I've received 1) tips on avoiding rape (e.g., don't wear pigtails, because rapists love to grab you by them, or overalls, because it's easy for rapists to snip the straps ninja.gif); 2) an urging to pester my doctor for some blood test that most physicians consider unnecessary (they do), even though it detects ovarian cancer early (it doesn't); 3) photos of Katrina approaching Mississippi (real photos, wrong storm).

Maybe I've gotten so much of this junk that I can spot a hoax after the first 3 words. I keep telling people to check snopes.com but I suppose it's more fun for them to hit 'forward.'

Maybe it was wrong of me, but I was annoyed when I went to a falafel joint near my house and saw a flyer for a Katrina fundraiser at a nearby bar, only the fundraiser was for animals. I am an animal lover, but at a time when so many people are suffering I just can't see siphoning off money for lost pets. I guess my priorities are different than other peoples.

Oh, that's nothing compared to the fun you get when you subscribe to a group e-mail list. We have one for my chorus and there are very few who know how to post properly. My favorite offender is the one who hits reply when they want to respond to one person, e-mailing their private message to everyone in the group (and then sending a follow-up e-mail apologizing). But we also get the urban legend posts, the "sign the petition" posts, the back-and-forth conversation posts, etc.

It's a wonder anyone reads the important e-mails.

It started just after people began saying "tor" instead of "tour," "yore" instead of 'your' (or "you're") and generally mispronouncing many words with "ou" in them. but not pronounciation, which is still prounounced, and spelled, pronunciation.

But what about this thenk business?

And the inflection that goes along with this thenk yo is particularly annoying.

The thenk is higher in tone, and the yo is a bit extended.
