there was a mosquito in my bedroom last night. I even saw it and tried to kill it, but it kept getting away from me. After a half hour of this I gave up, but put 40% DEET deep woods Off on my face and arms before going to bed. Still woke up this morning with a bite on my neck, one on the palm of my hand, and one on my forearm that has puffed up into a swollen, red 4"x3" itchy oval. angry.gif angry.gif

Apparently New York mosquitos are like cockroaches- nothing phases them and they'll survive a nuclear war.
Cathy
Tamar, I'm mosquito bait too. If there's one within a 5-mile radius, it will find me.

If you apply a paste of Accent and water to the bite shortly after it happens, the swelling and itching subside faster. As a repellent, have you tried those little gizmos that make a sound like a dragonfly? They've worked for me.
Tamar G
what's Accent? I have not heard of it.

You might want to try spraying your room w/anti-skeeter spray about 1/2 an hour before bedtime. If you have your windows open, spray the screens, especially the edges of them. I do this habitually in West Africa, where malaria-laden mosquitoes are said to prowl at dusk and dawn. Recently, the one night I forgot, lo and behold, I woke up at 5 a.m. to that awful bzzzzz in my ear.

Also, I find mosquito hunting much more effective with spray. Just aim and fire. You don't have to get as close, so they don't have as much of a chance to get away.

We have little fans (maybe 4" square) on either side of the bed. When either of us first hears a mosquito, we flick on the fan. Mosquitoes are disoriented by moving air, and will stay out of the airstream from the fan. We even take two of these fans with us when we travel in the summer, using converters for foreign outlets. They have been worth their weight in DutyFree many times!

We swear by diDelamine gel for bug bites, over-the-counter and not expensive. Immediate relief. Also purported to work is a drop of common household ammonia.

Tamar, I read recently that products containing eucalytpus are supposed to be extremely effective. Off came out with something but I was able to find it while on vacation. I am sympathetic as mosquitoes tend to favor me.

One cool thing I learned--alcohol attracts mosquitoes as it dilates your blood vessels. Of course this didn't stop me from downing Cliquot while grilling when I was on vacation.

Have you tried Avon's Skin so Soft? It has worked for me. Sorry--this is probably more than you wanted.

Avon's Skin so Soft?

Its active ingredient is citronella, I was surprised to learn.

A commercial product called Afterbite also works on the bite by neutralizing the acid that makes its itch. That's why ammonia works too, although Afterbite smells better and comes in an easy-to-apply pen-like container.

For any type of itch, rash or inflammation use Florazone available in Health food stores. No cortisone, it uses cardiospermum, some kinda tropical vine and it really works well. http://www.smhomeopathic.com/store/boericke.html

fantasty, you should also be using a rub on repellent when you visit West Africa. Our son didn't bother to. The onset of his case of malaria six months after he returned to NY was quite dramatic. Luckily, he had the least severe form.

some good, very informative ideas, especially as I'm about to go to Maine. I have never had one iota of success with skin-so-soft, but then I'm the person who always comes back with 2 dozen mosquito bites, when the person sitting next to me only got 3. They just adore me. I have found DEET to be the most effective thing.

I agree about DEET. Also, do not wear perfume in the woods. And I have a theory that mosquitoes do not like the smell of people who drink beer. In Maine, I recommend Geary's Pale Ale as a pleasant mosquito repellent.

I also react badly to mosquito bites. I now have a trained praying mantis which I keep hungry through the day and then place on a perch in the bedroom. I have no mosquito bites this year.
Lippy
Serious mosquitoes laugh at Skin-So-Soft.

I call my praying mantis Arthur. The mosquitos find this funny, and they laugh at her. This makes Arthur mad, so she kills even more mosquitos than she can eat. I have calculated that Darwinism will result in no laughing mosquitos by 2007 at the latest.

I really did decide I'd rather have malaria and just stopped taking the damn pills. (And my then roommate had contracted it, so I knew what it's like. That's how bad it was.)

Yeah, I now know there are better products out there.

I've made a very effective herbal oil that keeps the Texas skeeters away:

Open up a 4 ounce bottle of almond oil and add:

8 drops lemongrass oil
4 drops thyme oil
4 drops lavendar oil
4 drops peppermint oil

You should be able to get the little bottles of essential oils at a natural food store or an herbalist.

Malarone is great, except that I seem to be allergic to it. Savarine is a good option, and seemingly available over-the-counter in Switzerland and France. The best thing is to do as Ranitine suggests and not get bitten in the first place. I'm a fan of herbal bug repellants. My eau de citronella also contains eucalyptus, peppermint, and lavender, works very well, and doesn't cause my pink toe polish to turn silver (yes, silver) like Off.

My laptop has crawled to a standstill in the last several weeks.  I've removed all the temporary files and cookies.  I've gotten rid of old files and ran the disc defragmenter.  But I still can't get the damned thing to speed up.  Now, Blovie has brought home his father's laptop thinking I can fix that one as well.  What the hell was he thinking?  I know shit about computers.

You might also want to check for tracking spyware, if you haven't already. Sometimes these cookie-based files will slow down the processing as they record your destinations, etc.

Walt Mossberg had a column on the tracking versions of spyware a few weeks ago

I'm running anti-spyware on a weekly basis. I can't figure out is whether I need to run something for ad-ware as well or whether the software takes care of both. I'll look up the Mossberg piece to see if I can learn anything useful.

Right now I'm at the point where I can't decide whether it makes more sense to take the laptop in for a "check up and repair" or just buy a new one. I know we're at a point where these things are kind of considered disposable, but I can't justify tossing a $1500 laptop after 3.5 years.

You might want to alternate spyware tools, as well.

I have two, and one will occasionally pick up something the other missed.

I just ran another program that picked up 108 things. ohmy.gif

Hopefully, that will help a bit.

Was that with Ad-Aware SE?
This is a very effective program that I've recommended to all of my PC-using friends.

Go ahead, gloat. I love my hometown, but it has the worst weather in the world. Admit it.

Not true at all. Our climate is pretty temperate, relatively speaking. It's not San Diego but then what is, weather-wise?

Actually, Guadalajara is almost identical to San Diego--just flipflopped a bit. San Diego gets heat in August/September, we get it in April/May. San Diego gets rain in December/January/February/March, we get it in June/July/August/September/October. I've lived both places, they're both wonderful.

I know, but mosquitos are quite toxic to me too! Last summer I kept getting bitten on my face when I slept (I have screens and AC, but somehow one got in), and I would wake up and my eye would be half swollen shut, or my lip would be huge. I looked like someone was beating me. I had to bug bomb the apartment, for one little blood-sucking fiend.

I will try Ranitidine's beer remedy. It may not work, but it will be fun trying it out.

My mother used to say that the reason I was covered in mosquito bites every summer was that I had "sweet blood".
Mabelline
After spending my adult life and before out doors, I can only add a few painful observations.

People seem to fall into two categories. Those whose blood seems to "fire up" mosquitoes and fire ants, and those whose blood attracts wasps and the big stinging insects.

I have always used Parson's Lemon Ammonia to stop not only a bite, but poison ivy and oak from itching if cortizone was not available. The scent fades quickly, but it's affects are real. If I am remembering rightly, the bitepen with mink oil is 97% ammonia. For 4 bucks. Do the math.

Sulfur dust if in chigger or tick territory. If already chigger-infested, take a bath in a tub of cool water with a cup of liquid Clorox in it.

Do not wear perfumes outdoors. Especially a sweetish scented deodorant. Makeup with a strong scent attracts as well.Remember the olfactory capacities of Insecta as your guide.

Just hope it helps.
