And jumps up from the curb and bites you in the ass. I was waiting to cross Eighth Ave. yesterday and the aroma coming up from the sewer made me dizzy.

It's always bad, but it seems particularly worse today. There were a lot of really gross, half-liquid things on the sidewalk to step over this morning. I was glad that I hadn't eaten breakfast.

I got dizzy too after walking by some stench on Rector St this morning.
After having been in the Vineyard, the smells, the half-lit and barely air conditioned subways begs the question: What I am doing back? Good god, I'll take the car line at the ferry... ahh, ocean breezes

There's no one place that's perfect 12 months a year.
For me, NYC has a very high overall score even though July and August suck. There are all kinds of criteria that enter into what makes that so. It's not
just irrational exuberance that makes RE prices so stratospheric.

Outside, I hear tires squeal, and then after that sickening second-long pause, a crash. A moment later, another squeal, and another crash. Then a third squeal.
I go outside to learn that a couple of guys pulled out of a parking space, immediately sideswiped a car parked on the street (totaling it), then hit a tree on the other side of the street, then took off for parts unknown.
My car was two cars behind the totaled car, so at least I barely dodged that bullet. But I feel sorry for the poor schmuck who got hit; this happened yesterday afternoon, and as far as I can tell, he hasn't yet checked on his car and noticed the damage.
And just to add insult to (his) injury, he has a parking ticket on his windshield...

I have to check my window unit every couple of days. With the high humidity & the a/c frequently running, ice can build up inside. Fortunately, it's easy to access. When I first discovered the ice, the fins & pipes were 2/3 covered & I had to use the hair dryer on high for about 15 minutes to melt it.

When I go to the Bronx or Queens from Manhattan, everything is hunky-dory. But when I head for Brooklyn, the trouble starts. Recent experiences include a two-mile trek to change trains at Fulton St., having to go almost to Coney Island to travel from Eastern Parkway to Park Slope because of Sunday service changes, and last night's one-hour trip on the N from 60th Street to Atlantic Avenue. It was a lovely evening, and the sun sparkled on the water. And I had ample opportunity to admire this view from the bridge, where my train sat for almost 30 minutes.

That makes sense. Unfortunately, our unit is completely inaccessible - installed through a sleeve in a (very old) 2nd floor window that's been puttied shut around the a/c. It's doubtless filthy as well as iced.

Yes, that's what we're doing. The house is hard to cool, because it's basically one big open space, but there are several units that will both fit the window and deliver many more BTUs.

I'm running anti-spyware on a weekly basis. I can't figure out is whether I need to run something for ad-ware as well or whether the software takes care of both. I'll look up the Mossberg piece to see if I can learn anything useful.
Right now I'm at the point where I can't decide whether it makes more sense to take the laptop in for a "check up and repair" or just buy a new one. I know we're at a point where these things are kind of considered disposable, but I can't justify tossing a $1500 laptop after 3.5 years.

Sorry to hear of your computer woes, Bloviatrix.
This has happened to me before as well (computer very slow, antivirus and spyware software could not detect any infections), and I solved the problem by backing up important files from my harddisk, then wiping the harddrive clean (repartitioning the harddrive into one single partition) and completely re-installing my windows operating system from its backup cd-rom reinstallation disk. It was quite a drag having to reinstall all my software and other files after this, but worth it in that my computer was back up and running just like new. I think that if you have a computer with good tech support like IBM or Dell, calling customer support will get someone to walk you through this procedure over the phone.
