goddam comcast's alleged "nationwide internet outage" for more than 5 hours this evening. and even worse, that their customer service line was not only unreachable but that they didn't bother to put up a message about the outage on the "we can't take your call recording" seeing as how that was probably what everyone was calling about.
reason to be cheerful: apparently i can go 6 waking hours without internet access and not go insane.

Our Comcast (both tv and internet service) has been flaky, too. Friday it was out for a few hours, then Sat. for a few minutes, then today again for about an hour.

yes, this was my first major problem with my internet access in over 2 years.
digital cable's been pretty reliable as well--though it did go out for 5 minutes exactly when the academy awards began this year, causing us to miss the opening montage. i don't know how we coped. oh, i remember how: with chilli pakodas and gin and tonics.
but god help you if you ever need to call their customer service for anything.

Thanks, y'all. I was about to order and then thought I'd better talk to the SBC Global people and find out if I still have a contract with them. I don't think I should be required to replace the "free" crap modem they gave me that is malfunctioning, at a cost of $100.
I'm done with the bad connection. The rains affect my service, which stinks, and not only can the DSL modem not keep me connected, but the dial-up I had to endure when it was out dropped me repeatedly.

London GPs.
Today I ran for a routine, non-emergency appointment and was told that my GP has decided to ONLY take appointments on a day-before basis. Given that my diary is booked up to 2 weeks in advance, this is going to make things rather difficult.

What? It doesn't take you 2 or 3 months to get in to see a doctor in the first place?
Kikujiro
Apr 11 2005, 04:13 PM
The day-before system, which mine also has (maybe 2 days) seems like a good solution to me, but then routine, non-emergency appointments would be the problem.
Ms J
Apr 11 2005, 05:15 PM
Yep, exactly. In order to fit my work life to their system, I had to "book" a day in my diary next week (that's two weeks in advance, now) to keep clear during surgery hours. That would be pretty close to normal. However, I've also written a reminder to myself to start on the redial at 9am the day before to make sure the appointment actually happens, or I'll have to pre-clear another day and hope to dial in on time for that.
It's a bit like booking at RHR, only the petit fours really suck.

Just had paper rejected, which is dissapointing, but not the annoyance. The annoyance is that after the first round of reviews, one report was very positive, one very negative. The editors suggested extra experiments and another round of reviews. Did this.
Then they sent it back only to the one reviewer that was very negative, who was never going to change their mind no matter what I did. The extra experiements and reviewing process took five months, what a waste of my time.

Do you have any right to a form of appeal in the reviewing process? Just as they made you go through a process of revision?

Sounds as if the editor is being a bit of a dick. If he didn't think the new experiments would answer the reviewer's concerns to his (the editor's) satisfaction he shouldn't have asked you to do them.
But presumably the paper with the new experiments is stronger than the original so you should get it accepted elsewhere. Even if it's only The Australasian Journal of Parasitology.
