If you can get a doctor to prescribe it, get Hycodan. It stops coughing better than any drug I have ever taken. Unfortunately it's really hard to get a prescription as it contains codeine (I take it in half-pill doses and I don't get high or anything weird- I just stop coughing and I can sleep through the night.)

You should be able to get a prescription for codeine-containing cough syrup without much fuss. There's one that also contains a good expectorant, which is important to clearing the crud from your lungs. Either way, codeine is the only way to stop the coughing and a sympathetic doctor shouldn't have a hard time with that.
My heart goes out to all of you who are sick. I just hope you each have someone to play nursey, since the only thing worse than being miserably sick is being miserably sick and all alone.

Hmm...I have some Tylenol with codeine left over from my surgery. Maybe I should take those, since I'm not planning a trip to the doctor unless this gets worse. What I really need is Tussionex, one of those codeine-laced cough syrups that always worked wonders. And what I really need is a suppressant--I've been doing plenty of expectorating, thanks.

I asked at the drugstore for an oxymoron: an expectorant and cough suppressent. They sold me something that had just been approved for OTC sales. It did not work at all, and I took it back. I tried a few other things, and wish I'd have thought of codeine.
I used to get mad when I got sick. Now I just tell myself that A) my body is cleaning itself out of all that cheese; B) my immune system is flexing itself, which is a good thing. I don't want to be one of those "I never got sick a day in my life" people who die of cancer of the everything because they never got sick a day in their lives. When I went through a box of Kleenex in two days, I kept saying, "Good work!" to my body. It hurt like hell, though.
Noting codeine for the future. (Thanks, GG.)
